Ramseyer Farms has a long history of working with Girl Scout troops in the area, from Columbus to Cleveland, Ohio.

We can organize fun and educational Girl Scout activities centered on competitive and cooperative play, with a combination of individual and social activities. Our farm adventures are great opportunities for active outdoor fun, an ideal get-together for your troop.

In addition, we have helped many Girl Scouts earn various badges, and we can help Scouts in your troop, too. There are several regular badges that Scouts can earn here on the farm and many opportunities for make-your-own badges as well.

We strive to keep updated on scouting requirements in order to help Scouts earn their badges.

Hayrides are a normal part of the fun here at Ramseyer Farms and they run during the normal operating hours of the farm. Normally, they’re first come, first served, but if you want to schedule a private hayride for you and your family and friends, you can do that, too. And if you want to go one step further to set up a hayride party, here are some tips.

Reserve a bonfire site. Nothing says fall fun like a bonfire. It gives off warmth, looks great, and provides a central attraction for the party.

Stress appropriate clothing. It’s much easier to have a great time at a party if you’re comfortable. Layers are the key to comfort. They can be removed for the warm afternoon, put back on as the evening chill descends, and removed again when you’re sitting around the bonfire.

Bring festive-looking blankets. Just in case it gets really cold, you’ll be happy to have them on the hayride. Plus, there’s always somebody who doesn’t “get the message” to dress warmly.

Plan fun activities. No matter the ages of your partygoers, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy here at Ramseyer Farms. And if you come during our Fall Festival weekends, there’s even more!

If you would like to set up a hayride party at Ramseyer Farms, conveniently located between Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, please call 330-264-0264 today for information.

Another year has come and gone, and we’re happy for all the fun we’ve had, but a little sad that the season is over. And also sad that the Great Pumpkin didn’t choose our patch this year, so we’re going to be working hard this winter to make sure our patch will be the most sincere next year.

In all seriousness, though, winter is an important time here at Ramseyer Farms, and just because we’re not open, it doesn’t mean we’re not working hard. We tend to take a little breather after everything is packed up for the winter, but that’s pretty short-lived, as we have to start making things ready for next year.

The first thing we do is assess the past year and figure out what worked and what didn’t. On that basis, we decide what we should keep doing and what we should change. Sometimes, things change and we have to respond to them, like changes in curricula that mean we might have to revamp some of our material for educational events to make sure what we’re teaching is consistent with the most current standards.

The most important thing we do over the winter, though, is planning the next year’s Mystery Maize. What will the design be for 2012? We don’t know, yet, but by February we should have it nailed down. We can guarantee, though, that it will be spectacular and challenging, but will contain a mini maze for the faint of heart.

We hope you enjoyed the 2011 season as much as we did, and we hope to see you in 2012 at our convenient location between Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio!

If you still have a supply of produce from the Farm, read the following to learn how to keep it for winter use.

Winter squash such as pumpkins, acorns, or hubbards should be stored at about 50° F, and away from fruit like apples that give off ripening compounds. Identify the squash that has been bruised or damaged for using first. Acorn squash can be stored for up to 8 weeks, pumpkins for up to 4 months, hubbard squash for up to 6 months. Avoid contact with water—do not wash squash before storage. When you are ready to use it, a squash can be divided into smaller portions for storage in the freezer after cooking. They store especially well as puree, which is a first step for many squash recipes anyway.

Potatoes also store great for the winter. They should be stored in a cool dark place with proper ventilation. Never store potatoes in an airtight container. A temperature of 40 degrees is ideal. Do not allow the potatoes to freeze. Choosing a location with higher humidity will reduce potato shriveling. Potatoes can last 6 months if stored properly.

These are just a few examples. Most of the produce you’ll find coming from fall harvests is actually suitable for storage one way or another.

If you are interested in purchasing potatoes locally grown here at Ramseyer Farms between Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, please call 330-264-0264 or email Ramseyer Farms today. Supplies should last from fall harvest well into January. Feel free to call ahead to check on availability.
